6 August, 2024 | Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

 DN 7:9-10, 13-14

Gospel Mk 9:2-10

Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John,
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Rabbi, it is good that we are here!
Let us make three tents:
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;
from the cloud came a voice,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain,
he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone,
except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
So they kept the matter to themselves,
questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Reflections:

Jesus revealed His divine glory to His disciples. The dazzling transformation of His appearance, accompanied by the presence of the revered prophets Elijah and Moses, left the disciples awestruck.
As we reflect on this passage, let us recognise the significance of Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law represented by Moses, and the Prophets represented by Elijah. The heavenly voice affirmed Jesus as the beloved Son, urging us to listen to Him. During his earthly life, there was not only a single transfiguration, but there were more revelations or manifestations of his divinity: the Birth announced to the shepherds, the voice that cries out as He comes out of the waters after his baptism, the entry into Jerusalem, the Eucharist, his death on the Cross, his resurrection and ascension to heaven...

The Transubstantiation of the bread and wine is the greatest manifestation where Christ invites us to see him in the Eucharist with eyes of faith. He is waiting for us to meet him in the tabernacle. He is there, and he will transfigure you only if you are willing to follow him with humility and love.

Activity:

Make a   decision to overcome some area of selfishness and self-centredness in the coming days.
